We travel quite a bit looking for antiques, and keeping a useful record of those trips isn&#8217;t as easy as it sounds. Where did we stop? How much did we spend? Was that shop actually worth going back to? How many kilometres did we put on the vehicle?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then there are precious metals. You pick up a piece of sterling or gold jewellery and want to know what the metal is worth based on the current price. More importantly, if you&#8217;re buying it for resale, how much can you actually afford to pay?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Auctions create another set of problems. A $200 hammer price isn&#8217;t a $200 purchase once you add the buyer&#8217;s premium, tax and sometimes other fees. When you&#8217;re bidding, it&#8217;s much more useful to know your maximum bid before your hand goes up again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>None of these are particularly complicated problems. They&#8217;re just problems we kept running into. So we started building tools for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That eventually became <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/worldclassantiques.com\/collector-tools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Collector Tools from World Class Antiques<\/a><\/strong>, an Android app containing 16 tools for antique collectors and dealers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A direct link to download the app from Google Play is available at the bottom of this article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Trip Log was an important one for us<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A day spent buying antiques can involve a lot of driving and a lot of stops. Some produce great finds. Some don&#8217;t. Log<\/a><\/strong> lets you record where you went, the stops you made, what you spent and what you acquired. You can rate individual stops and make a note of whether they&#8217;re worth visiting again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you use it, you start building your own history of the places you&#8217;ve visited. You can see how often you&#8217;ve been somewhere, when you were last there, what you bought and how you rated the stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also wanted the practical travel expenses in there: fuel, meals, parking, tolls, admission, lodging and other expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For dealers using a vehicle for business, the Trip Log can also create vehicle logbooks using actual starting and ending odometer readings. Reports can be exported to CSV or PDF, including a Canada-focused format containing the vehicle-logbook fields identified in CRA guidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s basically the kind of record we wanted to have after a day or weekend on the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Precious metals needed more than a melt calculator<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>We knew we wanted gold and silver prices in the app. The <a href=\"https:\/\/worldclassantiques.com\/collector-tools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Precious Metals<\/strong> tool<\/a> shows the latest available gold and silver spot prices in Canadian and U.S. dollars. Enter the weight and purity of an item and you can quickly estimate its metal value. You can approach a purchase differently depending on whether you&#8217;re looking at scrap silver, sellable sterling flatware, ordinary gold jewellery, vintage jewellery or something with collectible or designer value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can enter an expected resale price and account for selling fees, shipping, repairs, buyer&#8217;s premium, taxes and the profit margin you&#8217;re trying to achieve. The calculation then gives you a maximum all-in purchase amount and, where applicable, a maximum hammer or tag price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s not an appraisal and it isn&#8217;t telling you whether to buy something. It&#8217;s simply doing the arithmetic while the item is still sitting in front of you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Auctions are much easier when you know your number<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone who buys at auction knows how quickly the numbers can change. The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/worldclassantiques.com\/collector-tools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Auction Buyer&#8217;s Premium Calculator<\/a><\/strong> is deliberately simple. Enter the hammer price and it calculates the estimated full cost after the buyer&#8217;s premium, lot or administration fees, tax, shipping, handling and packing. Or use it the other way around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;ve decided that $500 is the absolute most you want to have invested in something, enter your total budget and work backwards to find your maximum hammer bid. That&#8217;s probably the number we&#8217;d rather know before the bidding starts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then we started adding the other things we regularly need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once we started looking at numerals on old books, plaques and objects and wanting a quick way to convert them. You can use the camera or enter the numerals manually, and the recognition and conversion can work without an internet connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s an <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/worldclassantiques.com\/collector-tools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Antique Measurement Converter<\/a><\/strong> that handles the mix of metric, decimal inches and fractional inches we constantly encounter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are also tools for writing condition descriptions, generating inventory numbers, preparing dealer descriptions and creating price-tag information. We connected some of these so information can be passed from one tool to another instead of being typed again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For dealers with booths or retail spaces, there is a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/worldclassantiques.com\/collector-tools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Booth Discount Calculator<\/a><\/strong> for those inevitable &#8220;What would it be with 20% off?&#8221; conversations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s also a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/worldclassantiques.com\/collector-tools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Booth Performance Calculator<\/a><\/strong> for taking a more serious look at whether a space is actually paying for itself after inventory cost, rent, mall commissions, payment fees and other expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And a <strong>Consignment Settlement Calculator<\/strong> helps work through the numbers when an item is being sold for somebody else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A couple of tools are a little more unusual<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>One is the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/worldclassantiques.com\/collector-tools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Glass Glow Recorder<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collectors increasingly use UV lights when examining glass, but a glow under UV doesn&#8217;t automatically tell you what a piece of glass contains or when it was made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tool gives you a consistent way to record what you actually observed: the UV wavelength, glow colour, strength, coverage, location and how the object looks under normal light. It can then show possible explanations for the reaction and suggest things worth checking next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We were careful about this one. The tool doesn&#8217;t claim that a particular glow authenticates or identifies a piece. UV is another clue, not an answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/worldclassantiques.com\/collector-tools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Photo Documentation To<\/a>ol<\/strong> takes a similarly practical approach. You can use a photograph of an item and place numbered markers on chips, cracks, repairs, wear, stains or other areas you want to document. The original photograph isn&#8217;t changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That can be useful when you&#8217;re documenting something for inventory, preparing it for sale or simply keeping a record of its condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">We wanted the app to stay simple<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are now 16 working tools in Collector Tools, but we didn&#8217;t want the app itself to become difficult to navigate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can choose which tools appear in your Featured section, pin the ones you use regularly to the dashboard and rearrange them. The app also keeps your six most recently opened tools handy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the tools work offline, which matters when you&#8217;re travelling, inside an auction hall, at a market or anywhere else where the internet isn&#8217;t particularly cooperative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no account required just to start using the tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And we deliberately didn&#8217;t build the app
