Description

A beautiful large antique copper engraving by William Hogarth (1697–1764) titled "Noon: The Four Times of Day." Engraved with the letters, "Invented, painted, engraved and published by William Hogarth, according to Act of Parliament” on March 25, 1738.

A proper antique, created over 280 years ago by a master engraver in 1738, it is framed, under glass, and it is ready to hang on your wall.

We have available for sale a second engraving by William Hogarth - its matching pair - called "Night: The Four Times of Day". Created in the same year, it is hosted in a similar frame, by the same framer. When you have the chance, always buy in pair. The pair provides you with more decorative options and of course, more value.

The same engraving is displayed in The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Dimensions: Image: height: 17.3 inches and width 14.4 inches. Framed: height: 22 inches and width: 18.5 inches

The frame dates probably late 19th century to early 20th century, most likely done by T. Wood & Sons, Fine Art Dealers - established in 1868. See the framing label on the back. The frame has a bit of chips and scuffs but otherwise in good condition to adorn your walls. Please evaluate condition from the photographs.

About William Hogarth

William Hogarth was an English painter, engraver, and caricaturist who is best known for his satirical and moralistic prints and paintings, which depicted the social and political life of 18th-century England. Hogarth was also one of the most skilled printers and engravers of his time, and his works are highly sought after by collectors.

Hogarth's copper engraving technique involved etching an image onto a copper plate using a tool called a burin. He would then use a special acid solution to eat away at the exposed metal, leaving behind lines that would hold the ink for printing. Hogarth was known for his skillful use of cross-hatching and his ability to create a wide range of tones and textures with his lines.

His works continue to be admired and studied today for their technical skill, their vivid depiction of 18th-century life, and their moralistic messages.
