Description

Let's begin with the observation that we haven't come across any other instances of bookends like these. It's unclear whether Currier and Ives themselves produced them, given their involvement in the printing industry from 1835 to 1907. These bookends are undoubtedly at least a century old, if not older. Apart from the Currier & Ives marked prints, no other marks were found to indicate any other provenance. The images are printed on thicker paper stock.

We discovered identical images being utilized across various ceramics and other items, featuring scenes titled "American Winter Scenes - Morning" for Christmas.

Currier and Ives was a successful American printmaking firm based in New York City during the 19th century. It was founded by Nathaniel Currier (1813–1888) and James Merritt Ives (1824–1895) in 1834. The firm gained widespread fame for its lithographs depicting scenes of American life, landscapes, and events. Their prints covered a wide range of subjects, including politics, sports, disasters, and everyday life.

Currier & Ives prints were popular because they offered affordable art to a broad audience. They were known for their high-quality prints, vibrant colors, and detailed scenes. Their prints were widely distributed and could be found in homes across America.

Some of their most famous prints include "American Homestead - Winter," "The Life of a Fireman," "American Railroad Scene," and "Clipper Ship 'Flying Cloud.'" These prints captured the spirit of the time and became iconic representations of American culture.

Currier & Ives played a significant role in shaping the American visual identity during the 19th century. Their prints not only documented historical events but also helped to define the American landscape and way of life. Today, Currier & Ives prints are highly sought after by collectors and are considered valuable pieces of American art history.
