Available for purchase today is a rare, large, and heavy solid bronze crocodile ashtray with a matchbox holder, likely dating back to the early 1900s, if not even earlier. The piece measures just over 9 inches in length, not including the curved tail, and stands 2.5 inches tall at the top of its mouth. A similar item, though more recent and made from brass, was listed on 1stDibs for $889. Although it sold for less than the asking price, it’s likely that a collector still paid a significant amount.

It’s in great condition, with the hinge slightly loose, but still securely holding the two halves together without any risk of separation.

It has several intriguing features. When opened, you'll find three compartments in the bottom section, running from tail to mouth: (1) a small compartment for ash, with some of the original embossed writing still barely visible, (2) a large compartment for cigarettes, and (3) a dedicated compartment for matches, both clearly marked with embossed lettering. The bottom is also prominently marked with 'Solid Bronze' in large embossed letters. Additionally, a unique feature not commonly found in similar pieces is an embossed scratcher area in the bronze on the top part. Similar examples we've encountered in the marketplace were made of brass and didn't include the scratcher, whereas ours is made of bronze and is notably heavy.
