Description

We are always looking for antiques that tell a story. And this pair of Japanese okimono made of bronze fits all the characteristics of great artistry with great detail in their clothes, shoes, faces, and their temple bells and a great patinated bronze. They were made over 100 years ago and the quality of craftsmanship is formidable. One is a bit taller than the other. They are both on their own stand made of wood. The stands were made custom for the okimono but most likely they were made later - maybe 1930s - 40s. While the stands' shape fits the okimono perfectly, both sculptures can stand freely on their own. However, both stands are good quality and of an attractive shape so they do add value. The stand for the taller okimono is also larger than the other and they differ slightly in colour.

They are both in great condition for their age, with the following notes:

  • One of the epaulettes in one of the sculptures is broken, we'll include a detail image of the broken part below (see the last photograph). Otherwise this damage is barely visible due to the intricate details of the sculpture. Through this particular photo one can see the intricate details of the clothing - stunning!
  • The bells are held by very small bolts with their respective nut. One of the bells is missing 2 of them, although it's pretty solid hold by the third. We handled it carefully but confidently when displaying them. We believe that these nuts and bolts were added later to better support the large temple bell on their shoulders
  • There is a small nick at the bottom of one of the temple bells. Not visible unless you study it in detail. Please see the 6th photograph showing the detail. While looking at the nick, please study the detail of the temple bell as well

The bronze okimonos are pretty heavy. The taller one weighs 1450g and the smaller one 1350g - without the stands. When you purchase them, you'll get almost 3kg of antique bronze sculptures. The taller okimono is 7.2" in height while the smaller one is 7". Please see the 5th photograph of the sculptures with our business card to understand how large they both are.

Note: These are unique, hand-carved items. Please look at all photos closely to evaluate their condition as these are the exact items you will receive. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

We may have other antique japanese okimonos for sale in our marketplace. If you are interested in selling - we buy, one item or an entire collection. Please contact us.
