Description

Offered for sale is a rare antique spring lancet used for bloodletting. It was made in the 19th century and most likely belong to a doctor. We assume that he had the box made to custom fit the instrument.

The lancet is in excellent condition with a great patina. The spring is very strong and works perfectly. The fitted box has seen a repair at the joint. It also comes with a later photograph glued to the top of the box - we assume this was on display somewhere. To note that the National Museum of American History has a similar example, but it doesn't seem to be in the same good quality as our listing, and it's without its box.

Antique medical instruments are highly collectible, especially if they are rare, well-preserved, and have historical significance. Some antique medical instruments, such as these used in bloodletting, have a certain fascination or curiosity factor that can make them appealing to collectors.

Bloodletting with a spring lancet was a medical practice that was commonly used in the late 1700s and early 1800s. The practice involved making a small incision in a patient's skin with a spring-loaded lancet to allow blood to flow out of the body. The lancet was typically made of steel and had a sharp, curved blade that was designed to cut quickly and efficiently.

The practice of bloodletting was based on the belief that many diseases were caused by an excess of "bad blood" in the body, and that removing some of this blood could help to restore the body's natural balance. Bloodletting was used to treat a wide variety of illnesses, including fevers, headaches, infections, and even mental illnesses.

Bloodletting with a spring lancet was considered a relatively quick and easy procedure, but it could be painful and carried risks of infection and other complications. Patients were often strapped down to prevent them from moving during the procedure, and the lancet was usually sterilized by boiling before use.

The use of bloodletting began to decline in the mid-19th century as medical knowledge and technology improved, and it is no longer considered a standard medical practice today. While some modern medical procedures, such as blood donation and phlebotomy, involve the removal of blood from the body, they are done in a much more controlled and sterile environment than bloodletting with a spring lancet was.
