The Culpeper microscope is a type of simple microscope that was popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. It was invented by the English optician Edward Culpeper (1660-1738) and was widely used in the field of microscopy.
Available for immediate purchase is a gorgeous 170+ years old example in its mahogany case, with additional lenses and a variety of accessories. The box has an additional, hidden compartment with even more accessories.
Dimensions: Instrument at mid height is 11 inches. Box is 7cm tall, 12.5cmm deep, 26cm wide.
The Culpeper microscope was a single-lens microscope that consisted of a single convex lens mounted on a brass stand. The lens was usually set in a tube and was positioned above the specimen being viewed. The specimen was placed on a glass slide, which was held in place by clips attached to the microscope.
Victorian Culpeper microscopes were popular among amateur scientists and students because they were relatively inexpensive and easy to use. They were often used to study simple biological specimens, such as plant cells and animal tissues.
Despite their simplicity, Culpeper microscopes were able to achieve relatively high magnifications, usually around 200-300 times the size of the specimen being viewed. They were also relatively robust and durable, and many examples of Victorian Culpeper microscopes can still be found in museums and private collections today.
