Venus is shown as she rises from the sea, born from the froth of the water's surface, her arms raised to wring the water from her damp hair. She stands tall, wearing a knotted shawl tied at the waist. A beautiful, expressive piece with the goddess shown in her iconic pose.

The looped attachment at the base suggests this piece may have been originally mounted to a casket.

This evocative statuette is based on a famous lost Greek work, a much admired painting by Apelles, who employed Campaspe, a mistress of Alexander the Great, for his model. The stunning beauty of his work inspired later Roman artisans from all over the Empire, as is the case with this wonderful piece.
