Description

Being sold today is a Japanese ivory Okimono of a fisherman. Intricately carved during the late 19th century. Comes with its original stand, stamped at the bottom with probably an inventory label. The Okimono is signed at the bottom. The fisherman has a basket of shells on its back and a bag of fish in left hand. The bottom is very nicely carved as well, with a few prints in the sand or in the mud, as well as a few rocks and a tree stump?

Good height at 3.4 inch tall without the stand. In great condition for its age. It has a crack in the back at the bottom of his skirt, and leg - a clear indication of its age. Also, a small repair at the bottom of its right leg. None of them detract from its display value as they are in the back and not that prominent.

Note: This is a unique, hand-carved item. Please look at all photos closely to evaluate its condition as this is the exact item you will receive. Lots of closeups included.

For centuries, Japanese artisans have honed their craft of ivory carving. Meticulously shaping each piece, these skilled carvers created breathtaking sculptures that showcased their patience and precision. One notable form of Japanese ivory carving is the Okimono, a larger version of the traditional netsuke - small decorative toggles used to secure pouches or containers to a person's obi (sash). Unlike netsuke, which were meant to be functional and practical, Okimono were created purely for decorative purposes.

This sophisticated antique item will add an air of elegance to any room and is sure to catch the eye.
