Incredible! That's the only word we can use to describe this masterfully crafted antique netsuke. It is 5.5 cm tall and signed by the artist. In excellent condition. High resolution photographs have been included of his face as well as the author's signature.
In netsuke carving, "Repentant Oni" refers to a subject matter or motif depicting a demon-like creature called an "Oni" in a state of repentance or remorse.
In Japanese folklore, Oni are supernatural beings with fearsome and often malevolent powers. They are often depicted as large, horned creatures with sharp claws and teeth, and are associated with evil, chaos, and destruction. However, in some stories, Oni are capable of remorse and regret for their actions, and this is where the concept of Repentant Oni comes from.
In Repentant Oni netsuke carvings, the Oni is often shown in a crouched or kneeling position, with a facial expression that conveys remorse or sadness. This portrayal emphasizes the idea of redemption and forgiveness, which is a common theme in Japanese folklore and culture.
We are not sure how repentant this particular Oni is, but it's a beautifully carved piece of art. Nowadays, netsuke are predominantly sought after as artistic treasures, preserved in museums and personal collections. You'll certainly be holding a piece of Japanese culture in your hands.
