Description

The level of skill involved in crafting this antique netsuke is truly remarkable. It's a 19th century netsuke of the Bunbuku Chagama. It stands at 3.5cm tall and signed by its author.

Bunbuku Chagama is a Japanese folktale about a tanuki (Japanese raccoon dog) that transforms itself into a teapot (chagama) to help a poor man. The story has been retold in many forms, including in netsuke carvings.

In the case of the Bunbuku Chagama netsuke, the carvings typically depict the tanuki in its transformed state as a teapot, with the spout and handle forming the animal's legs, tail, or other features.

Bunbuku Chagama netsukes are highly collectible among netsuke enthusiasts and are considered to be a symbol of good luck and prosperity in Japan. They are often used as decorative pieces or incorporated into traditional Japanese attire for special occasions.
