Description

Available for sale today is a 3-draw barrel antique brass marine telescope. The 3-draw barrel is a type of optical instrument that was commonly used by sailors and navigators in the past. It was designed specifically for use at sea and is known for its durability and ability to withstand harsh marine environments. It's in great condition for its age.

Brass covers are utilized to protect both the eyepiece and the lens of the telescope. It measures 33 inches when stretched to its full length.

The telescope is made of brass, which is corrosion-resistant and can withstand exposure to saltwater. Brass was a popular choice for marine instruments due to its durability. The cylindrical barrel that can be extended or retracted using a series of draw tubes. The 3-draw barrel means that there are three nested tubes within the barrel that can be pulled out to adjust the telescope's length.

The telescope's optics are designed to provide magnification and clarity over long distances. The objective lens is located at the front end of the telescope and gathers light, while the eyepiece lens is at the opposite end and is used for viewing. The number of draws typically doesn't affect the magnification power, but it allows for a longer or shorter physical length.

By adjusting the draw tubes, you can focus the telescope on distant objects. Each draw tube can be extended or retracted independently, allowing for precise adjustments to achieve a sharper image.

Antique brass marine telescopes with 3-draw barrels are sought after by collectors and enthusiasts due to their historical significance and craftsmanship. They are valued both as functional optical instruments and as decorative pieces. Owning one can provide a glimpse into the maritime history and the tools used by sailors to navigate the seas.

Typically, antique brass marine telescopes are often found with leather coverings, but it is relatively uncommon to come across examples adorned with tightly wrapped rope. The rope covering serves a practical purpose as it provides a secure grip, particularly in wet conditions, ensuring a firm hold on the heavier end of the telescope. This distinctive feature leads us to believe that this particular telescope was genuinely used aboard a ship during its active service.
