This enchanting antique toy, crafted by Lehmann in Germany around 1900, is a captivating piece of history that evokes the spirit of time gone past. This wind-up toy offers a delightful glimpse into the world of early 20th-century toy craftsmanship.

The wind-up mechanism remains operational, although it may need a little encouragement. The clown's vertical movement appears somewhat hindered. When you position the clown correctly, the mechanism still exerts force to raise it. It is our opinion that with some minor repairs, it could be restored to full functionality.

It is accompanied by its original box, which, while not in pristine condition, still retains vibrant colors on the top and remains structurally sound. A few stains, small detached pieces are included with it. Small writing on one of its side. Please see all the enclosed photographs to evaluate its condition.

The toy features a charming clown seated on a golden and cream-painted cart, adorned with lithographed images of acrobatic clowns on its large side wheels. A closer look reveals intricate marks that add a touch of nostalgia and authenticity to this antique toy. The back of the cart showcases a dancing clown, adding to the whimsy of the design.

The clown himself is a work of art, with a tin head, shoulders, arms, and legs, adorned with a pointed ruff collar. His body is draped in dark yellow cotton, concealing a cleverly engineered crankshaft that stretches and compresses, creating a captivating oscillating motion. In our case this motion does not seem to work entirely. The ingenuity of the mechanism is a testament to the craftsmanship of Lehmann.

The other star of the show is the balky mule, a tin creation covered with dark grey flock, boasting four movable legs. This endearing creature is harnessed to the cart's shafts, with reins extending from its mouth to the clown's hands. When this toy is wound up, a clockwork mechanism springs to life. The large wheels turn, and the clown, with comical grace, sets the mule into motion. The original rope is detached from one of the clown's hands.

The Balky Mule Clown serves as a charming reminder of the artistry and ingenuity of the early 20th-century toy makers. Its enduring appeal makes it a valuable collector's item.
