Crispus Caesar 317 - 326 AD

Crispus, the eldest son of Constantine, was appointed Caesar around 316 and was groomed in the military and political expectations of a future emperor. Crispus was given various military responsibilities by his father and played a significant role in the Roman political and military spheres during his lifetime.

However, his promising career was abruptly cut short in 326 when his stepmother Fausta accused him of attempted rape. Constantine, believing her story, ordered Crispus's immediate execution. Subsequently, it was discovered that Fausta had fabricated the entire accusation. In response, Constantine had her executed by boiling. Fausta's likely motive was to eliminate Crispus from the line of succession, paving the way for her own sons. In this, she succeeded, as her sons eventually became emperors about ten years later.
