Description

Offered for purchase today is a pair of charming vintage glass items. Although one piece predates the other, they harmonize perfectly as a display set. The initial item is a Fenton vase in the hobnail pattern, crafted from vaseline glass. Due to its utilization of uranium, this vase boasts a delightful yellow hue and exhibits a stunning luminosity in the dark and under UV light. Refer to the included photographs to witness the vase emanating its radiant glow.

The second piece is a Fenton cornucopia bud vase in a blue opalescent hue, featuring the hobnail pattern. Both vases are of superior quality, unmarked, and are in impeccable condition, free from any chips, scratches, or glass cracks. The stand included in the photographs is not included. Both are approximately 3.5 inches tall.

About Vaseline Glass (Uranium Glass)

Vaseline glass, also known as uranium glass, is a type of glass that contains uranium, which gives it a yellow or greenish glow under ultraviolet (UV) light. The name "Vaseline glass" comes from its resemblance to the color of Vaseline petroleum jelly. This type of glass gained popularity during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Here are a few key facts:

  • Vaseline glass contains a small amount of uranium oxide in its composition. The uranium content is usually less than 1%, and it is the uranium that gives the glass its characteristic yellow or green fluorescence under UV light.
  • The most common color of Vaseline glass is a pale yellow or yellow-green, but it can range from a light yellow to a more intense green. The color can vary depending on factors such as the specific uranium compound used and the conditions during the glassmaking process.
  • The peak production of Vaseline glass occurred during the late 19th century and the early 20th century. It was particularly popular during the Victorian era and the Art Nouveau period.
  • Vaseline glass was used to create a wide variety of glassware, including bowls, vases, plates, cups, and decorative items. Some pieces were produced by well-known glass manufacturers, while others were made by smaller, regional companies.
  • While Vaseline glass contains uranium, the levels are generally considered to be low and safe for handling. However, it's advisable to exercise caution when it comes to pieces that may be damaged, as chipped or broken glass could potentially release small amounts of uranium dust.
  • Vaseline glass has become highly collectible among antique glass enthusiasts. The unique fluorescence under UV light adds to its appeal. Collectors often seek out specific patterns, shapes, and colors, and they may pay attention to the condition of the glassware.

About Fenton Art Glass Company

Fenton Art Glass Company was a prominent glassware manufacturer known for its handmade glass products. It was founded in 1905 in Williamstown, West Virginia, by brothers Frank L. Fenton and John W. Fenton, and became famous for its artistic glassware, including vases, bowls, and figurines.

Bud vases are typically small, narrow vases designed to hold a single flower or a few small flowers. They come in various shapes, sizes, and designs. Fenton has produced a wide range of glassware over the years, featuring different colors, patterns, and shapes. Their pieces often have distinctive characteristics such as hobnail patterns, opalescent glass, and intricate designs.

Fenton was an early innovator in producing iridized glass, commonly known as carnival glass. This type of glass is treated with metallic salts to give it an iridescent sheen. Fenton's carnival glass became highly popular during the early 20th century.

One of Fenton's most iconic and enduring patterns is the "hobnail" pattern. Introduced in the 1930s, the hobnail pattern features a bumpy, raised design resembling small round beads. It became one of Fenton's signature styles and was applied to various glass pieces.

Fenton glass has become highly collectible, with enthusiasts and collectors seeking out both vintage and contemporary pieces. The uniqueness of colors, patterns, and shapes contributes to the appeal of Fenton glass in the collector's market. Search the marketplace for Fenton Glass.

At World Class Antiques we have a fondness for antique glass, particularly those that glow under UV light.  For more options, make it a habit to explore our marketplace frequently for additional selections of Vaseline glass.
