About Joe Rice and the House of Glass

Their narrative commences in 1888 and extends unbroken to the present day. Joe Rice initiated his journey at the family glass factory in 1962 at the tender age of twelve. As he spent hours crafting glass art alongside his uncles Joe, Ed, Bob, and Paul after school and during summer breaks, a fervent passion for the art form took root. Through years of dedicated practice, often foregoing breaks and extending his work hours beyond the regular schedule, he cultivated a deep commitment to fine craftsmanship and an abiding love for the art of glass.

The glass utilized in their process is a 96 COE soda lime formula, meticulously developed by Philips Lighting in the Netherlands specifically for the studio glass industry. Soda lime glass, constituting one of the three primary glass families alongside soda lead and borosilicate, embodies the foundation of our craftsmanship. Supplied to us in pelletized form, this glass is carefully loaded by hand into our 450-pound electric furnace, a ritual repeated twice each week to ensure the quality and precision integral to our artistic endeavors.

If you are a collector or dealer of such paperweights, we invite you to consider joining the Paperweight Collectors Association of Ontario. This association provides a platform for enthusiasts to share knowledge, experiences, and a mutual appreciation for these timeless pieces.
