Available for purchase today is an antique Vaseline epergne vase, dating back to the early Victorian era of the 1880s. Crafted with a distinctive ruffled edge and adorned with a captivating stripe pattern on the glass, this piece rests on a gilt metal base.
Vaseline glass, also known as uranium glass, derives its name from its resemblance to Vaseline petroleum jelly. This type of glass contains small amounts of uranium, which gives it a characteristic yellow or greenish hue. Notably, Vaseline glass exhibits a unique property of glowing under ultraviolet (UV) light, adding to its intrigue and collectibility.
During the early Victorian period, Vaseline glass gained popularity for its luminous appearance and was often used in decorative objects like vases and tableware. Its glow, coupled with its ornate designs, made it a desirable choice for affluent households seeking to enhance their interiors with elegance and sophistication.
It stands at 10 inches tall and it's 5 inches wide at the top. It is in excellent condition considering its age! No cracks and no chips to the glass. There appear to be a few small areas on the base where the gilt has worn away. Additionally, the delicate metal pattern supporting the vase seems fragile and shows slight signs of wear. That being said, the glass vase is securely seated in its gilded base.
At World Class Antiques we have a fondness for antique glass, particularly those that glow under UV light. For more options, make it a habit to explore our marketplace frequently for additional selections of Vaseline glass.
