About Michael Andersen & Sons Pottery

  • Michael Andersen & Sons Pottery is a renowned Danish pottery company that was founded in the late 19th century and operated until the late 20th century. It was established in 1885 by Michael Andersen (1859–1931) in the town of Bornholm, Denmark. Bornholm, known for its rich ceramic tradition, provided an ideal environment for the company to thrive.
  • Initially, the pottery produced traditional Danish stoneware items like crockery and pots. However, it gained significant recognition and success when it began experimenting with artistic ceramics in the early 20th century. Under the leadership of Michael Andersen's sons, Daniel Andersen (1885–1959) and Jørgen Andersen (1888–1969), the company expanded its range to include decorative pottery, art pottery, and unique sculptures.
  • One of the pivotal moments for the company was when it hired talented ceramicist Marianne Starck in the 1950s. Starck's innovative designs and artistic vision played a crucial role in shaping the identity of Michael Andersen & Sons Pottery. Her collaboration with the company resulted in the creation of distinctive pieces that combined traditional craftsmanship with modern aesthetics.
  • While Marianne Starck is perhaps the most well-known designer associated with the pottery, Michael Andersen & Sons also collaborated with other artists and designers. These collaborations resulted in diverse styles and designs, reflecting the artistic talents of individuals beyond the company's core team.
  • Michael Andersen & Sons Pottery gained international acclaim for its high-quality craftsmanship and unique designs. Its pieces often feature intricate hand-painted motifs, sculptural forms, and vibrant glazes inspired by nature and Danish folk art.
  • Michael Andersen & Sons Pottery was known for its experimentation with glazing techniques. They developed unique glazes such as "Persia" and "Sung," which gave their pieces distinctive and vibrant colors. These innovative glazes contributed to the pottery's allure and set it apart from other ceramic manufacturers of its time.
  • Although the pottery is often associated with its Danish roots, it enjoyed international recognition and success. Michael Andersen & Sons exported its wares to various countries around the world, contributing to the global popularity of Danish ceramics during the mid-20th century.
  • Despite its closure in the 1990s, Michael Andersen & Sons Pottery remains highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts worldwide for its artistic merit and historical significance in Danish ceramic art.

About Persia Glaze

  • The Persia glaze was composed of specific ingredients, including minerals and oxides, that were carefully formulated to achieve the desired crackle effect when fired in the kiln. The exact composition was likely a closely guarded secret within the pottery.
  • After the pottery pieces were coated with the Persia glaze, they underwent a firing process in the kiln. The firing temperature and duration were critical factors in achieving the crackle effect. The glaze was formulated to contract at a different rate than the underlying clay body during cooling, resulting in the characteristic crackled surface.
  • The crackle patterns varied in size and density, adding visual interest and texture to the finished pieces. Some pieces featured fine crackles, while others had larger and more pronounced cracks, depending on factors such as glaze application and firing conditions.
  • The Persia crackle glaze not only provided a unique visual effect but also enhanced the overall aesthetic appeal of Michael Andersen & Sons Pottery. It added a sense of age and authenticity to the pieces, reminiscent of ancient pottery techniques, which appealed to collectors and enthusiasts.
  • Due to the nature of the crackle glaze, pieces finished with the Persia technique required special care to preserve their appearance. They were often displayed as decorative items rather than functional pieces, and precautions were taken to avoid exposing them to extreme temperature changes or harsh cleaning agents, which could potentially damage the delicate crackle surface.
