Description

The Red Wing RumRill vase is a beautiful example of American craftsmanship, designed by the notable George Rumrill in the 1930s. This vase stands as a testament to the artistry and innovation that characterized the era, blending form and function.

This vase features an ivory-colored base that has been wiped with a brown over-glaze, which helps to highlight the intricate patterns. This glazing technique not only enhances the visual appeal but also adds depth and character to the piece. The hexagonal base and the structured body align with the geometric emphasis of the Art Deco movement. The decorative patterns on the vase, particularly the use of stylized, streamlined designs, are indicative of Art Deco aesthetics. The stylized organic motifs reflect the period's fascination with combining natural elements with modern forms.

Marked on the base with RumRill 449.

About George Rumrill

George Rumrill, a visionary designer, collaborated with the Red Wing Pottery company to create a series of unique and elegant pottery pieces. Red Wing Pottery, established in Minnesota in the late 19th century, became well-known for its stoneware, art pottery, and dinnerware. Rumrill's designs, produced under the RumRill name, are particularly prized for their distinctive shapes and glazes. The partnership between Rumrill and Red Wing Pottery lasted from 1933 to 1938, producing a variety of pieces that continue to be highly collectible.

Did you know?

  • One of the standout features of RumRill pottery is its innovative glazing techniques. Each vase was finished with unique glazes making every piece distinct.
  • George Rumrill was known for his experimental approach to design. He often pushed the boundaries of traditional pottery forms, creating pieces with unconventional shapes and intricate, almost sculptural details. This experimental spirit is reflected in many of the vases and other items produced during his tenure with Red Wing.
  • The glazes used on RumRill pottery can exhibit subtle variations in color, even within the same design. This was partly due to the firing process, where slight differences in kiln temperature and atmosphere could result in unique variations. Collectors often seek out these subtle differences, as they add to the individuality and charm of each piece.
  • While RumRill's designs are often associated with the Art Deco movement, they also show influences from the earlier Art Nouveau style. This blend of influences resulted in pieces that are both modern and timeless, featuring clean lines and naturalistic motifs.
  • The collaboration between George Rumrill and Red Wing Pottery was relatively short-lived, lasting only about five years. This limited production period has contributed to the rarity and desirability of these pieces among collectors.
  • After the end of his collaboration with Red Wing Pottery, George Rumrill moved his operations to Florence Pottery in Mount Gilead, Ohio. This transition marked a new phase in his career, but the designs produced during his time with Red Wing remain some of the most sought after by collectors.
  • There is a dedicated community of collectors and enthusiasts who specialize in RumRill pottery. They often share information, trade pieces, and gather for conventions and exhibitions, keeping the legacy of George Rumrill’s work alive and well.

This Red Wing RumRill Pottery Vase not only adds a touch of vintage elegance to any space but also carries with it a rich history and the legacy of American pottery design. Whether you are an avid collector or simply appreciate finely crafted art pieces, this vase is a remarkable addition to any collection.
