About McCoy Art Pottery

The origins of McCoy Pottery trace back to 1899 and even earlier. They were known for a wide range of decorative items, including vases, planters, cookie jars, and figurines. One of their most iconic lines is the cookie jars, which became highly collectible and are often characterized by whimsical and playful designs.

During the 1920s and 1930s, McCoy produced art pottery that reflected the popular design trends of the time, such as Art Deco and Art Nouveau. These pieces often featured vibrant glazes and intricate details, making them highly sought after by collectors today.

McCoy pottery is often marked with the "McCoy" name, and identifying marks can vary depending on the period and type of ware. Early pieces might have more subtle or hand-incised markings, while later pieces often have more prominent stamps. Understanding these marks is crucial for collectors in identifying authentic McCoy pieces.

Some of McCoy’s most popular lines include the "Floraline" series (line started in 1960), known for its simple, modernist designs; the "Harmony" line (also released in 1960), which featured sleek and elegant forms.

The company officially ceased operations in 1991, but McCoy pottery remains highly collectible, with certain pieces fetching high prices at auctions and antique markets.

The Surge in Mid-Century Modern Pottery and Glass Prices

Mid-century modern (MCM) design has seen a significant resurgence in popularity over the past several years, which has driven up the prices of related items, including pottery and glass. Collectors and enthusiasts are drawn to the clean lines, organic forms, and innovative designs characteristic of the mid-century modern era.

Many collectors and enthusiasts have a sentimental connection to the mid-century modern era, often reflecting a desire to recapture the aesthetics of their youth or an idealized past. This nostalgia drives demand for authentic pieces from that time.

Another reason for this surge in prices is that, mid-century modern design remains a popular choice among interior decorators and homeowners. Its clean lines, functional forms, and timeless appeal fit well with contemporary decor, leading to increased interest and higher prices for authentic pieces.

The new items being produced today often don't match the high quality of the older pieces. Mid-century modern pottery and glass often exhibit high-quality craftsmanship and innovative techniques. Collectors value these aspects, which can contribute to higher prices, especially for well-preserved or rare items.

One other reason is limited availability - many mid-century modern pieces are becoming scarce as they age and are lost or damaged over time. Limited availability of authentic, well-preserved items can drive up their value.

Whether you're a long-time collector or just beginning, this McCoy vase would be a delightful addition to any art pottery collection. If you are looking to collect more McCoy pottery, we have a selection of reference books available for purchase in our marketplace.
