Description

This mid-century flame glaze ashtray, crafted by the now-defunct Canadian Ceramic Craft (CCC), represents a piece of Canadian pottery history. With its vibrant glaze and characteristic design, it embodies the creativity and craftsmanship of Canadian ceramic companies that thrived in the mid-20th century but are no longer in operation. A wonderful example of the artistic legacy left behind by CCC, it’s a striking reminder of a bygone era of local pottery production.

It is a large ashtray, at approximately 7.5 inches in diameter, perfect for making a statement as a corner centerpiece, even if you are not a smoker - use it as a catchall or simply as a testament to Canadian pottery artists of the 1950s and 1960s. Capacity for 3 people, 6 cigarettes. Excellent condition with no chips nor cracks. A bit of glaze crazing seen at high magnification, commensurate with its age. It seems like it was never used.

About Canadian Ceramic Craft (CCC)

Canadian Ceramic Craft (CCC), also known as Canadian Ceramic Corp., was part of the thriving pottery scene in Canada during the mid-20th century, a time when local ceramic production was popular and in demand. They produced a wide range of items, including figurines, vases, planters, and other decorative and functional wares. Their pottery often featured bright glazes and mid-century design elements, which were fashionable at the time.

The company emerged when there was a surge in popularity for decorative ceramics, often due to the influence of American and European ceramic trends. CCC focused on creating affordable, attractive pottery that could easily be used in homes across Canada.

CCC pieces reflected popular styles of the 1950s and 1960s, including modernist influences, vibrant colors, and organic shapes. Their wares were produced to cater to the middle class, which was enjoying a post-war boom and sought stylish home goods.

CCC often used different variations of their marking style, including "CCC" incised or stamped in different ways, which has led to some confusion among collectors. Occasionally, their pieces are marked with just a number, leading them to be misidentified. By familiarizing yourself with their glazes and styles, you'll discover that their work stands out distinctly among other ceramic manufacturers.

They experimented with glazes, which included everything from matte finishes to shiny, vibrant colors. Collectors appreciate these variations, especially those with unique drips or color combinations, which can sometimes add value.

Because CCC items weren't always mass-produced in the same quantities as larger manufacturers, some pieces are rarer, making them especially appealing to collectors today who are looking for more unique, vintage Canadian pottery.
