Description

This tiny, high quality ashtray hails from the now-defunct Grand Hotel Bristol in Merano, Italy, a once-grand establishment that first opened its doors in 1954. Designed by ship architect Marino Meo, the hotel quickly became a symbol of luxury and elegance, boasting Europe’s first rooftop pool. It attracted high society and dignitaries until its closure in 2007. Today, the site where the hotel once stood is occupied by a large retail store, but its legacy lives on through artifacts like this unique piece.

The ashtray is marked on the front with a medieval-looking castle in front of mountains (see old photographs of the Bristol Hotel in Merano for context), along with the words 'HOTEL BRISTOL MERANO.'

The ashtray is marked on the back with "Schonwald Schonhuber Franchi," a brand recognized for its high-quality porcelain. This manufacturer, established in Germany, is known for creating fine tableware and hotel porcelain, making this ashtray not just a functional item but a collectible treasure. In square format, at 3.5 inches wide, it is in excellent condition with no chips nor cracks. It’s unlikely that it has ever been used.
