Boyd Glass: Peacock & Stork Baby’s Cup, Scarce Custard Glass, Glows
A scarce Boyd Glass piece with a touch of radiance.
- Item # 593421
- Qty Available 1
This Boyd Glass baby’s cup features the "Peacock & Stork" pattern, made from custard glass that glows strongly under UV light. The soft yellow hue of the glass transforms into a vibrant, striking glow, making it a standout piece in any collection.
Boyd Glass, founded in the 1970s, quickly gained recognition for its colorful, hand-crafted glassware. The company’s pieces are known for their intricate patterns and vivid tones. The "Peacock & Stork" design is one of their less common patterns, adding a unique touch for collectors.
While this baby’s cup is an excellent example of Boyd’s craftsmanship and a fascinating collectible due to its glow, it’s important to note that custard glass often contains uranium, which is what causes the glow. Although the uranium content is low and typically not harmful, it’s best to keep this piece as a display item rather than for regular use, especially if intended for a child. Marked on the bottom with the B inside of the diamond shape - see the last enclosed photograph for the mark.
About Boyd Glass
Bernard C. Boyd began his glassmaking career as a teenager and accumulated over 60 years of experience before founding Boyd Glass with his son. The Boyd family’s legacy in glassmaking spans four generations, beginning with Zack Boyd, Bernard C.'s father, who started in the industry at age 13 in 1901. Bernard F. Boyd and his son, John B. Boyd, continued this family tradition, ensuring the preservation of proprietary glass color formulas and techniques.
Boyd Glass pieces are easily recognizable by their distinctive "B" in a diamond mark, sometimes accompanied by additional letters or numbers indicating specific series. The company maintained traditional glassmaking methods, emphasizing manual craftsmanship over automation, a factor that resonated with collectors and visitors alike.
After 36 years of operation, Boyd’s Crystal Art Glass ceased production in 2013. At the time of closure, the company sold its molds, some of which were originally acquired from Degenhart Crystal Art Glass, to various buyers. These molds are still in use today, producing glass items, though without the original Boyd trademark.
