Description

This Antique American Brilliant Cut Glass Ashtray, dating from 1910 or earlier, is a stunning example of early 20th-century artistry. American Brilliant Cut Glass (ABCG) was highly regarded for its intricate and detailed designs, often featuring geometric patterns and exceptional clarity. Leading manufacturers like Steuben, Tuthill, and Hawkes were renowned for producing some of the finest pieces of this glass style. Although this ashtray is unsigned, its exceptional quality, weight (2kg 650g), and flawless crystal structure suggest it was made by a skilled artisan. Measuring 7 inches in diameter and 2.5 inches tall, it provides ample space, holding up to four cigarettes comfortably.

What sets this ashtray apart is its hand-cut design. Upon closer inspection, you’ll notice the subtle unevenness of the cuts, a hallmark of manual craftsmanship. The sharp, crisp edges of the cuts further differentiate this piece from mass-produced molded glass, offering a tactile quality that molded pieces simply can't match. The star pattern on the bottom, large lip, and diamond pattern on the sides are classic features of ABCG, showcasing the meticulous work of the period. Given its age—over 100 years old—this piece remains in excellent condition, making it one of the finest crystal ashtrays we've had the pleasure of owning.

Have we mentioned its impressive weight? This piece weighs 2 kilograms and 650 grams of premium crystal! Drop it on your foot, and we’re pretty sure it could break a bone or two. Imagine this ashtray in a turn-of-the-century, affluent home, its intricate cuts catching the warm glow of candlelight or gas lamps. Picture the scene: a couple of well-dressed individuals, perhaps discussing business or politics, as they relax in a grand parlor. The faint scent of tobacco lingers in the air as the ashtray holds their cigarettes, its crystal gleaming as they share their thoughts on the world’s affairs, framed by the opulence of the time. This piece is not just a functional object; it’s a silent witness to the conversations and lifestyle of a bygone era.

If this is not a perfect example of early 20th-century opulence, we honestly don’t know what is. Its intricate cuts, premium crystal, and design make it a true representation of the luxury and elegance of that era. The unique shape—highlighted by its large lip and exceptionally wide sides—sets it apart from other ashtrays, adding to its distinctive, commanding presence.

Did you know? Brilliant Cut Glass is that it was originally developed to mimic the sparkle and brilliance of diamonds. Glass cutters used intricate techniques to create deep, faceted cuts, reflecting light in a way that imitated the sparkle of precious gemstones. The process required exceptional skill and time, which is why these pieces were often considered luxury items, highly sought after during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
