Description
This antique brass or bronze tikka box is a beautifully crafted and heavy Hindu pooja accessory, designed for storing sacred powders used in rituals and ceremonies. With a rich patina that speaks to its age, this piece is both functional and historically significant.
In excellent condition, it is 4 inches wide, a bit taller than 3 and half inches, and pretty heavy at 500 grams.
It features a detailed peacock lid that unscrews to reveal six compartments. Here’s what it could have been used for:
- Sindoor (Vermillion) – A red powder worn by married Hindu women.
- Kumkum – Similar to sindoor but used for religious markings on the forehead.
- Haldi (Turmeric Powder) – Used for skincare, rituals, and medicinal purposes.
- Chandan (Sandalwood Powder/Paste) – Applied for cooling and spiritual significance.
- Kajal (Kohl) – Used as an eye cosmetic.
- Betel Nut Pieces or Perfumed Powders – Sometimes included for personal grooming.
These boxes were found in Indian households and often belonged to women for daily makeup or religious rituals. Some were also used for storing spices, medicines, or paan ingredients.
