The Origins of Grandfather Time
Today’s editorial offers a comprehensive look at the origins of the grandfather clock, tracing the history of timekeeping from ancient civilizations like the Egyptians and Babylonians, who used sundials and water clocks to measure time.
The Renaissance period introduced mechanical clocks, with Italian Tower Clocks marking a significant evolution. The invention of the pendulum clock by Christiaan Huygens in 1656 significantly improved timekeeping accuracy, leading to William Clement’s creation of the anchor escapement and the long case clock. This clock, housed in a tall, elegant wooden case, became known as the grandfather clock, a term popularized by Henry Clay’s 1876 song.
The editorial also highlights the craftsmanship involved in creating these clocks, with materials ranging from oak to fine mahogany, and intricate designs that transformed them into valuable pieces of art. Today, these clocks are highly prized, with some fetching millions at auction.

Picker’s Perspective: Northwood Early American Pattern Glass
The blog post on World Class Antiques’ "Picker's Perspective" focuses on two early 20th-century Northwood pieces: a sugar jar and a butter dish, both featuring hand-painted cherries and gold gilding. These items, picked up for $10 each, are valued significantly higher on resale platforms like Etsy and eBay. The post also highlights the history of Northwood Glass Company and the charm of the East End Vendors Market in Stayner, Ontario, where the finds were made.
